Loveday, J., Peterson, B.A., Efstathiou, G. and Maddox, S.J., 1992, ApJ, 390, 338: The Stromlo-APM Redshift Survey I. The luminosity function and space density of galaxies

Normalisation of type-dependent LFs.

For the uncorrected Schechter fits, I calculate phi* = 1.30e-3 and 2.40e-2 for early & late types respectively. However, this is certainly an underestimate due to the fact that a significant number of galaxies near the survey limit were classified as uncertain instead of early or late type.

One correction is to scale the above phi* by the factor Ntot/(Ntot - Nunclass) = 1.27.

Probably a better correction is to reassign the unclassified galaxies as early or late type at _random_, but in the correct proportions (25% early) and then redo the whole LF analysis. I then get (again ignoring mag errors):

  E+S0                 Sp+irr
alpha = -0.46          -1.24
M* = -19.87            -19.56
phi* = 2.04e-3         1.15e-2
Assuming 0.3 mag gaussian random error:
  E+S0                 Sp+irr
alpha = -0.35          -1.06
M* = -19.71            -19.28
phi* = 2.25e-3         1.55e-2
Note that more reliable type-dependent LF parameters for Stromlo-APM galaxies are obtained using spectral classifications (Loveday, J., Tresse, L., & Maddox, S.J., 1999, MNRAS, 310, 281).

Fig 3 - SWML estimates for phi(M).

Columns are M, phi, phi_err, assuming h=1. NB: type-dependent estimates (b, c) are biased by classification incompleteness (more low-luminosity galaxies are unclassified than highly luminous galaxies).
